Rebellion
by Scott YanowThis set is one of the best all-round showcases for the underrated Chicago guitarist George Freeman. He has an opportunity to really stretch out on seven standards, taking his time, letting his notes sing, and coming up with fresh variations. Although essentially bebop/hard bop, Freeman also throws in occasional ideas that let the listener know that he is quite familiar with later developments in jazz. An unusual aspect to this date is that Freeman's brother, tenor saxophonist Von Freeman, plays piano throughout the session. Although not a virtuoso, Von Freeman provides stimulating accompaniment and some excellent solos. Recommended.
