A Tree Frog Tonality
by Steven LoewyJohn Lindberg's recordings as a leader are characterized by complex, creative arrangements, and this is no exception. Captured after a grueling European tour, the all-star quartet assembled by the bassist focuses on slow, sometimes brooding or repetitive, but more often than not intellectually stimulating, lines that swirl with low pressure intensity. Lindberg, of course, is featured throughout as a soloist, and trumpeter Leo Smith, who has rarely sounded more compelling, also plays extensively to good effect. Larry Ochs (heard on tenor sax and soprano) plays a surprisingly subordinate role, detracting somewhat from the total sound, although his rendition of some Lacy-like melodies is well done. Percussionist Andrew Cyrille is perfect for the sort of highly sensitive structures, complementing the bassist throughout. This one should please Lindberg's admirers, and it shows a more introspective side than is found on some of his other group recordings.
