Jazz may have been born in New Orleans but it blossomed in Chicago in the first quarter of the 20th century. Despite facing some adversity in her life Anita, who considered herself a musician rather than just a singer, managed to carve out a singing career that lasted more than 60 years as arguably the last instantly recognisable jazz diva of a group that included Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae.
