Ready to Fly
Calaveras. It's a little river with a melodious name that runs down through the rolling Sierra Foothills to the central valley delta and on to the San Francisco Bay. It's the Spanish word for "skulls." It's a folk trio from the Bay Area that tries to keep its music honest, organic and challenging. Their songs have captured the Kerrville New Folk prize, the Napa Valley Emerging Songwriter award, Northern California Songwriters Association Song of the Year, first place in three categories in the 2005 West Coast Songwriter's Song Contest, and have appeared in TV and movies. Their live show is a mix of Victoria's soaring vocals on pure folk ballads and sultry jazz-fusion torch songs, Greg's energetic and insightful musical treatment of birth, death and everything in between, and Dave's constantly creative lead-guitar commentary. Their most recent album, Ready to Fly, has won widespread critical acclaim. "Wonderful music, wonderfully performed" according to Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. "An awesome mix of traditional and modern folk sounds." according to CDReviews.com. Check out "Ready to Fly," which has been covered by several other artists and selected for a major folk compilation album, and "My Town," the 2005 Grand Prize winner of the West Coast Songwriters Song Contest. Their next CD is in the works and should be ready for the release later this year. Their hope is that the music will speak for itself.
