Anchor Baby - Cancelled
Singer/Songstress La Mer brings her eclectic and emotional tracks to life on her second EP, “Anchor Baby. Based out of Venice Beach, Los Angeles, La Mer has taken every opportunity to spread her musical wings and experiment with different sounds. From her time spent on Broadway in New York City to the underground Art party scene in Brooklyn, to her touring days with the band The Mumbles, she’s allowed life to be her education in both songwriting and sound. After taking a break from performing and touring, La Mer took time out of the social scene for research, introspection and self discovery, shifting her focus to songwriting and recording. She recently returned home to LA, positioning her compass in the spring of the Venice renaissance. Settling in as Venice’s own gritty hula girl, La Mer has been making quite a splash with her little blue guitar and lulling melodies, attracting attention of local industry veterans and local venues. With the help of Grammy Award winning producer and engineer Andy Kravitz, La Mer has solidified the direction of “Anchor Baby” to make for a truly unique sound. Her debut single “Closer” is a romantic, radio ready track that showcases her sweet vocals and knack for tapping into the emotional storytelling of truly great songwriting. With a voice that moves smoothly over the melody, she makes you believe in how deeply she wants this new love, falling freely into it without any hesitation. It’s a perfect summer track, chasing those winter blues away from the first note, full of hopefulness and endearing qualities that litter all of La Mer’s music. The title track, “Anchor Baby” is an ethereal and unique sound that allows her voice to flourish and become the focal point of the track. With a steady rumbling beat beneath her atmospheric vocals, backed up by standout lyrics like “my love is a flame, the deepest ocean, I want to show you my devotion,” it’s yet another song that paints her as a brilliant songwriter. There’s an underlying sense that she’s floating atop the water, her voice and words the anchor of the song, making for truly special musical experience. Staying true to her name (La Mer means the sea in French), the track “Sailor” is a stand-alone track with a strong, smooth leading melody, layers of call and response, and driving beat that carries it through to the climax. With such a stripped back feel it allows her lyrics to shine in a song about solitude, love lost , remaining humble, and not allowing your pride to get the best of you, despite everyone around you and how they may be living their life. “Into The Deep” is a subterranean love song, lacking the cliché of so many of the songs we hear on radio these days, calling out to the confusion that can come with loving someone but knowing that you should let go. The mix of the tremolo and bottleneck guitars layered under her vaporous lyrics create a sense of being underwater, allowing the lyrics and the instrumentation to relate in an effortless way. La Mer has a true talent for building songs that are cohesive, allowing the story to flow not only through the lyrics, but also through the music itself. In “Love Alive” she finds yet another unique way to describe what it’s like to fall in love. Returning to the sweet disposition in her vocals that work so perfectly with classic pop songs like this, she exposes her vulnerability while remaining timid and unsure, moving with ease over the fervid beat. The entire song is wrapped in sweetness, from the cellos gliding along with La Mer’s perfectly emotive vocals, to the piano adding that full bodied sound from this mostly stripped down EP; it’s another track that will lend itself to mainstream radio. Throughout “Anchor Baby” La Mer exposes her talent for building beautiful, flowing stories that interweave with her instrumentation in such a lovely and surprising way, full of exciting vocal tracks and timeless lyrics. There’s nothing ordinary nor cliché in La Mer’s music, making her one of the few artists that willingly exposes her heart and soul to make music that speaks truthfully for her, the journey she’s been on, and to those who can relate . -Sera Roadnight, MT Press links: Facebook.com/LoveLaMerMusic Twitter.com/LoveLaMerMusic youtube.com/LoveLaMerMusic vimeo.com/LoveLaMer soundcloud.com/LoveLaMer reverberation.com/LoveLaMer instagram@Love_La_Mer LoveLaMer.bandcamp.com
