Fight Fight Fight

Fight Fight Fight

by Amy HansonAlthough best known for their 1978 smash hit "I Can't Stand the Rain," which catapulted vocalist Precious Wilson into the solo arena, Eruption nonetheless remained intact and continued to record their odd English/Jamaican hybrid of disco lite. This album is no exception. Adding Kim Davis to the mix, Eruption cruises through a set which, in light of just how strong the genre could be, is pretty bland. "Go Johnnie Go" kicks off Fight Fight Fight and has all the right dance elements present (including the ubiquitous whistle), but suffers from sounding too much like too many other songs -- which could be why it emerged as the "hit" single for the disc. While the horn-laden funkfest "Fight Fight Fight" is easily the best track on the album and "Come Back to Me" does turn in some respectable disco grooves, the band also add the reggae-fied tracks "It's Alright," "Stand Up and Sing Hallelujah," and "Spaced Out" to the brew. The result is too scattered to ever gel to a successful whole. In trying to reach the largest audience possible, Eruption included so many genres that this set of mild pop songs ends up feeling frenetic -- not the smooth grooving pop that it was probably intended to be.
