Stockholm Sweetnin'
by Scott Yanow Connie Evingson, a singer with a sweet tone and a flexible style, teams up with the Hot Club of Sweden (consisting of two guitarists and a bassist) to perform music that is naturally reminiscent of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. There are differences, though. Even though there are a few guest musicians, there are no violinists. The repertoire, which includes a few swing standards, also includes bop tunes and such modern selections as "Windmills of Your Mind," Abbey Lincoln's "Throw It Away" and "Autumn in Kokkola" which was co-written by Evingson. However Connie Evingson and her musicians do a fine job of adapting the songs to the format, bringing out fresh variations and meanings in the sometimes unlikely material. There is a joy to this program that is quite infectious, the musicianship is impeccable and the singer is heard throughout in prime form. Recommended.
