Winter Heart
"When we first sat down to work on this album one thing we knew we didn't want to do was make one of those typical, slick-sounding pop Christmas albums with strings and horns and everything. We love Christmas and even enjoy some of those types of Christmas albums, but as artists that's not really who we are. So we decided to approach the Christmas songs in our own way, being inspired by the amazing lyrics of these old songs and and hoping to tell the story of Jesus' birth in our own style. And I think we ended up with something really interesting and compelling that will hopefully put some of these familiar tunes in a fresh light. We went for a loose, live band feel and hopefully you can tell its just a bunch of friends sitting in a room jamming and playing off each other. And Deb's vocals on this album are astounding. I think its the best she's ever sung in the studio because it really captures the energy and rawness you get at our live performances. We named the album after the original song Deb wrote, 'Winter Heart'. The chorus os it is so cool to me because it captures the idea of Jesus' birth being the historical event that moved us from the Old to the New covenant. The chorus says, 'Now the older days have passed away, He has come to make us new. Through His love and pain, this Son to reign in the beauty of grace and truth.' Which was also inspired by my favorite Christmas verse, John 1:14 which says, 'The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.' That's just an amazing reality that so often gets lost among the noise and glitz of our modern Christmases. I hope we captured some of that spirit in these tracks! The other track that surprised us with how it turned out is the last one on the album. Its a Scandinavian Christmas carol from the 1700's that was suggested to us by a good friend in Norway. When we first heard the song we fell in love with it! It sounds so haunting and beautiful when sung in Norwegian, so that's what Deb did...and she killed it!" ~Dust & Daisies guitarist Rob Solberg on their new Christmas CD
