Haydn: Theresienmesse & Kleine Orgelmesse
This is an outstanding box set with all the Haydn masses, and a reference in the genre. The only set that comes close to this is the Naxos edition Haydn: Complete Masses [Box Set]. However, the Naxos set is not complete. Haydn wrote a total of 14 masses. The Mass, Hob. XXII: 2 Missa sunt bona mixta malis and Mass, Hob. XXII: 3 in G major Missa rorate coeli desuper are not included in the Naxos set. The reason why this two masses are not included is because those early works are fragmentary, and of uncertain provenance. They are included here in the Chandos set. Another difference between the Naxos and the Chandos set is that the Chandos set includes the Salve Regina, and the Naxos does not. The Naxos set includes the Stabat Mater, the Chandos set does not. This Chandos set comes with 8 CDs in cardboards and a 43 page booklet with the complete track listing, an essay for every mass, the texts of the masses in Latin, English, and German, and biographies of the artists. The outstanding quality of all this recordings has been pointed out by many, among them the Gramophone Classical Music guide. This set is magnificent, and it combines ideal, sympathetic soloists with outstanding choral and orchestral forces led by Richard Hickox, who consistently offers performances that bring out the freshness and originality of Haydns writing, in a definitive version of these choral master works. Last but not least, this is an opportunity for you to get the distinguished cycle of Haydns mass settings that was issued in full-price, single-disc guise at an unbeatable price.
