[00:17.32]For helping me to be totally reintegrated and normalised
[00:20.75]Only in the world's greatest socialist democracy
[00:24.93]Could one hope to be forgiven for losing temporary sight
[00:29.55]Of the aims and goals of the of the Marxist/Leninist revolution
[00:33.55]Two years it took me to be cured of my illness
[00:38.35]Being still a relatively young and fit man
[00:41.35]I was still in search of fulfilment
[00:43.77]The memory of Olger Sergey and my two children
[00:48.89]Motivated me to seek an occupation
[00:51.20]That would both repay my debt to my great party
[00:54.82]And obviously help the way to international socialism
[00:56.69]I was still unable to resume my lectureship at the sub-nucleonic particle physics
[01:03.49]And therefore volunteered to help our Afghan comrades
[01:08.18]In their great struggle for liberation
[01:10.36]I was readily accepted
[01:13.17]Into a motorized maintenance unit
[01:15.41]It was not long before I realised that our support
[01:41.03]For the liberation struggle of our comrades in Afghanistan
[01:44.46]Was not viewed at all together unanimously by the local population
[01:48.95]In fact we were not allowed outside of the barracks unless we were in large armoured groups
[01:55.88]During our brief stay in Afghanistan
[01:58.81]We had discovered some of the very few pleasures open to visitors to this desolate place
[02:04.38]A local concoction called “hashish” was being increasingly used by our troops
[02:10.57]And many of the helicopter gunship and tank crews moreover
[02:14.76]Would smoke large chillums and joints before embarking on missions around the mountains surrounding Kabul
[02:20.68]Every week comrades who had fallen into the hands of the rebels
[02:27.48]Would be found in various states of dismemberment around the camp

[02:34.22]Were sent from rehabilitation
[02:35.60]To the German democratic republics
[02:37.90]Since this would prevent any undue alarm by our loved ones back home
[02:42.21]The wisdom of this policy is evidence of our leaders' great care for their people
[02:47.33]Apart from hashish there was not much to divert or endure the cold mountain nights
[02:56.75]And increasingly there were signs of the troops acquiring the illness of which I had previously been cured
[03:03.67]And therefore my attention was focused more on looking at the few animals that were kept within the military compound
[03:12.22]As is often the case between human beings and animals
[03:17.40]A close bond of affection can develop
[03:21.27]And I became increasingly close to a camel I named Dimitri
[03:26.57]Ah dear Dimitri
[03:29.95]No one can really understand the relationship between a man and his camel
[03:35.94]As was the case with the army doctors and my superiors
[03:39.56]Who sent me to convalesce in the German democratic republic
